New Build Electrical - Common Questions

As early as the plan stage – ideally before your final drawings are signed off. Decisions about switchboard size and location, cable routes, solar and EV provisioning, and where the ducting for a heat pump runs are much cheaper to make on paper than on site. We work alongside your architect and builder from planning through to handover, so the electrical design fits the house rather than being retrofitted around it.

It depends on the size of the house and the level of fit-out, so we price each new build off your plans rather than working to a standard rate. We’ll walk through your plans with you and give you a free, no obligation quote.

A new build needs a new connection to the local network – Northpower across Whangārei and Kaipara – and that has to be applied for before you can be connected and metered. We’ll tell you exactly what’s needed and when, so the connection isn’t the thing holding up your Code of Compliance.

You’ll receive a Certificate of Compliance (CoC) and an Electrical Safety Certificate (ESC) for the completed installation. The new installation must be independently inspected by a licensed electrical inspector before the property can be connected and livened. We arrange that inspection and build it into the programme, so it isn’t a surprise cost or a delay at the end of your build. All work is done to AS/NZS 3000, and your certification goes to your building consent file.

More than you think, and in more places than the plan usually shows. The most common regret we hear is too few outlets in kitchens, bedrooms and outdoors – adding them during the pre-wire costs very little, adding them later means opening up finished linings. We’ll go through the house room by room with you before we start wiring so the layout matches how you’ll actually live in it.

Yes, and it’s the single best-value decision you can make during a build. Leaving conduit runs, switchboard capacity and cabling in place while the walls are open means adding solar, a battery or an EV charger later is a straightforward job rather than a rewire. As Tesla Powerwall Certified Installers and Fronius Solutions Partners, we install solar and batteries ourselves – so the provisioning we leave in your build matches what we’d actually install.

In three main stages: pre-wire before the linings go on, fit-off once the interior is finished, and testing and handover at completion. We coordinate directly with your builder so we’re on site at the right time and don’t hold up the next trade.

Yes – heating, ventilation and air conditioning is done in-house alongside the electrical work. Planning it into the build means ducting and cabling routes are set before lining, which gives you better placement and a tidier result than a post-build retrofit. We install the best heat pump brands in New Zealand, including our preferred partner Panasonic, and can specify wall or ducted systems to suit the house.

No. Every job is done by our own qualified, Master Electricians. That means the team you meet at the planning stage is part of the team that is on site – one point of accountability for the whole installation.

We back our installation work with a 10-year workmanship guarantee. Manufacturer warranties on fittings and equipment are separate and vary by product – we’ll tell you what applies to the items specified for your build.
