What Our Clients Say

Commercial Electrical FAQs

Yes, that’s a large part of what we do. We work as the electrical subcontractor on commercial construction projects, from tender through to handover. We’re experienced in working to a construction programme, attending site meetings, coordinating with other trades, and providing the documentation the main contractor requires at each stage.

Most commercial projects are priced as a fixed quote against drawings or a scope of works. Variations are priced and agreed to before we do the work, so there are no surprises in our invoices. Smaller service and maintenance work is charged at our hourly rates. For anything with a defined scope, we’ll assess the job on site and provide you with a quote free of charge.

Yes. For retail, hospitality, healthcare and manufacturing sites, we schedule the disruptive work for evenings, weekends or shutdown periods so your operation keeps running. Shutdowns get planned properly, with the isolation sequence, duration and restart agreed with you in advance. After-hours rates apply, and we’ll tell you upfront how that compares with doing the work in normal hours.

Yes. We hold current health and safety documentation and work to the site-specific safety requirements of whichever contractor or client we’re working for. We can supply our safety documentation, insurance certificates and prequalification details as part of any tender or prequalification process.

Yes. We’ve delivered Ministry of Education projects, along with work in healthcare, government and community buildings. That type of work has its own requirements: police vetting where required, working around occupied buildings and term dates, staged handovers, and documentation that satisfies both the contractor and the property owner.

Yes. Scheduled maintenance suits properties where an electrical failure means lost revenue: manufacturing, cold storage, hospitality, healthcare and dairy. A maintenance programme helps to identify faults before they stop production, and it provides you with a documented history of maintenance. We’ll build a schedule around your site and equipment. See our maintenance services for more.

Yes. We test and tag electrical equipment for businesses, from office equipment and kitchen appliances to power tools and extension leads. We can also test your RCDs while we’re at it. Each item gets a tag showing when it was tested and when it’s next due, and you’ll receive a record of everything we’ve checked. How often equipment needs testing depends on the environment: every few months on a construction site, and every few years in an office. Testing and tagging isn’t a blanket legal requirement, but it’s the standard way businesses show they’re managing electrical risk under the Health and Safety at Work Act. We’ll work around your hours where we can, to keep disruption to a minimum.

The building owner, and it’s one of the most commonly missed obligations on a commercial building. Emergency lighting is a specified system on your compliance schedule, so it needs regular testing and annual certification to keep your Building Warrant of Fitness current. Talk to us about what your building needs and we’ll tell you what we can cover.

Yes. Adding plant, refrigeration, EV chargers or three-phase equipment often means the existing supply or switchboard can’t carry the load. We assess the existing installation, work out what capacity you actually need, and handle any application to Northpower if the connection itself has to be upgraded.

For most businesses, yes, and often more so than for a home. Commercial sites use the bulk of their power during daylight hours, when a solar system is generating, so more of what you produce gets used on site rather than being exported at a low rate. The businesses that get the most out of solar are the ones with steady daytime load: manufacturing, cold storage, packhouses, dairy sheds and offices. We model your actual consumption before recommending a system size. Export to the network needs Northpower approval and may be limited, which we cover when we scope the system.

Yes, for staff parking, fleet depots and customer-facing chargers. The main considerations are how much spare capacity your supply has, how many vehicles need charging at once, and whether you want load management so the chargers don’t trip the site. We’ll look at your existing supply first, because that usually determines what’s practical.

Yes, agricultural work is a core part of our commercial business. That covers dairy sheds, irrigation and pump systems, implement sheds, standby generator connections, three-phase supplies and farm solar. Rural installations deal with long cable runs, voltage drop, harsh conditions and equipment that has to keep running whether anyone’s there or not. Farm solar in particular is worth looking at where you’ve got shed roof space and a steady daytime load.
