Renovation and Rewiring FAQs

The clearest signs are a switchboard with ceramic fuses instead of circuit breakers, power points with no earth pin, and fabric or rubber-insulated cabling in the roof space. Rubber-insulated wiring was common in homes built before the 1960s and becomes brittle with age, which can be a genuine fire risk. Other signs are lights dimming when an appliance starts, fuses blowing repeatedly, warm switch plates, or not having enough outlets for how you actually use the house. If you’re not sure, we’ll conduct an inspection and tell you honestly whether it needs a full rewire or just targeted work.

No, most renovation rewires can be staged. A common approach is to rewire the rooms you’re already opening up, upgrade the switchboard, and leave the remaining circuits until a later stage. Staging costs a little more overall because we’re back on site more than once, but it spreads the cost across your project and lets you tackle the highest-risk areas first. We’ll plan a sensible order with you before anything starts.

If it still has ceramic rewireable fuses or no RCDs, yes, and it’s usually the first thing to do in any renovation. An older board often doesn’t have the capacity for what a modern renovation might add: induction cooking, a heat pump, an EV charger, solar. Upgrading the board gives you proper circuit protection for the whole house and means later additions don’t need another board change.

Yes, for any new or altered circuit. Current wiring rules require RCD protection on new socket outlets and lighting circuits in homes, and that applies to the work we do even if the rest of the house predates the requirement. This is one of the strongest safety improvements a renovation delivers, and it’s part of why a switchboard upgrade is usually the sensible starting point.

It depends entirely on the size of the house, how accessible the wiring is, and how much of the work you’re doing at once, so we quote each job after seeing the property. Quotes are free and there’s no obligation. Request a free quote and we’ll arrange a time to come and look at the job, or call us on if you’d rather talk to one of our friendly team first.

In most cases, yes. Power gets isolated circuit by circuit rather than shutting the whole house down, so we can usually keep essentials running while we work through the job. Full rewires are more disruptive, with days where large sections, or the whole house, will have no power. We’ll communicate which days those are so you can plan around them.

Yes. Concealed wiring in older homes is something we do regularly across Northland. Where possible we run cables through the roof space, under floors and inside existing wall cavities so original scotia, panelling and plaster stay intact. Where a wall has to be opened, we keep the access points small and in the least visible place, and coordinate with your builder or plasterer so any patching and finishing is done properly. We’ll walk the house with you first and show you exactly where we’d need access.

Either works. A lot of clients choose their own fittings, and others ask us to specify for them. If you’re supplying, we’ll give you a schedule of what’s needed and the deadline for having it on site so it doesn’t hold up the fit-off. If you’d rather we handled it, we can specify and supply fittings, switches and lighting controls, and you can see some options on display at our Whangārei showroom.

Yes, and a renovation is the best time to do it. Retrofitting is far easier while walls are open and the switchboard is already being upgraded. As Tesla Powerwall Certified Installers and Fronius Solutions Partners, we install solar and battery systems in-house, along with heat pumps and EV chargers, so it’s one team and one quote.

Yes. Adding power points to a room, moving a light, wiring a heated towel rail. No job is too small. You’ll still get a Certificate of Compliance (CoC) and an Electrical Safety Certificate (ESC) for the work, and where a job involves mains work or a new switchboard it’ll also be inspected by a licensed electrical inspector.
