General Electrical FAQs
Our standard rate is $100 + GST per hour. There’s no flat callout fee, but there is a vehicle charge of $20 + GST within Whangārei and out to Zone 1 at Whangārei Heads, then $1.70 per kilometre + GST beyond that. After-hours callouts are $150 + GST plus time-and-a-half on labour. All of this information can be found on our rates page. For anything larger than a service call we’ll provide you with a free, no obligation quote.
Yes, we offer urgent same-day callouts, and after-hours work for faults that can’t wait. Call and we’ll give you an honest indication of when we can be there. Anything involving smoke, burning smells, sparking, or water reaching wiring is urgent: turn off the main switch if it’s safe to do so, and call us right away. A dead power point or a light that won’t work will cost you less if it waits until our normal opening hours.
It’s usually caused by a fault on that circuit, and the RCD or breaker is doing its job. Unplug everything on the affected circuit, reset the switch, then plug appliances back in one at a time. If it holds until a particular appliance goes back in, that appliance is the problem. If it trips again with nothing plugged in, the fault is in the fixed wiring and needs an electrician. Don’t keep resetting it. Fault finding is routine work for us, and it’s usually quicker and cheaper than people expect.
Yes, and it’s one of the most common jobs we do on older Whangārei homes. If your board still has ceramic rewireable fuses, or no RCDs, it’s both a safety issue and a capacity problem. Modern households add loads that older boards were never designed for: induction cooking, heat pumps, EV chargers, solar. We’ll assess what you’ve got, work out the capacity you actually need, and handle load management so that adding the next thing doesn’t mean another board change.
Yes, for homes and for businesses. The first question is always whether your existing supply and switchboard can carry the load, which is why an EV charger and a switchboard upgrade often get quoted together on older properties. We’ll also talk through whether a smart charger is worth it, since scheduling charging for off-peak hours, or for when your solar is generating, is where the running cost savings actually come from.
Yes. Connecting an electric stove, oven, hot water cylinder or extractor fan isn’t DIY work. By law it has to be done by a registered electrician. We supply, install and service appliances, and we do breakdown repairs. Hot water is the one that we get called about the most: if you’ve got no hot water, it’s often the element or thermostat rather than the whole cylinder, so get it checked before replacing anything.
Yes, interior and exterior, including security lighting. Good lighting design matters most in a kitchen or living area, where layered lighting makes a real difference to how a room feels. Outdoors, we handle security and sensor lighting, path and garden lighting, and lighting for sheds and outbuildings. Pop into our Whangārei showroom to see what’s on display and talk through the options in person.
Yes, including systems for passive homes. Northland’s high humidity is what creates condensation on windows and the musty smell in bedrooms through winter, and a properly specified ventilation system moves that damp air out of the house rather than just circulating it. We assess the house before recommending anything, because the right system depends on the construction, the insulation and how the house is used. A standard unit fitted to the wrong house will run constantly and still leave you with a damp house.
Yes. We can help with smart lighting and switching, automated blinds and heating control, and integrating existing smart devices so that they work together rather than needing four different apps. The practical advice we’d give is to keep it simple and make sure it still works manually. We’ll design a system around what you’ll actually use.
We back every installation with a 10-year workmanship guarantee. If something we installed fails because of the way we installed it, we come back and get it sorted at no cost to you. Products are covered separately by their manufacturers’ own warranties, which vary by product. If something isn’t right, call us on .
Yes. Any prescribed electrical work we do comes with a Certificate of Compliance (CoC) and an Electrical Safety Certificate (ESC). Where a job involves mains work or a new switchboard, it also needs an independent inspection by a licensed electrical inspector, which we arrange. Keep the certificates somewhere safe. They matter for insurance, and you will be asked for them if you decide to sell.
